Choosing the Right London Underground Advertising Format
August 17, 2026
London Underground advertising covers a wider range of formats than most people realise, and picking the right one has a big impact on how well a campaign performs. Here’s a practical breakdown of the main options and when each one makes sense.
Posters
Classic printed posters remain a reliable, cost-effective way to build broad awareness across stations, ticket halls and platforms. They work well for simple, high-impact creative that needs to land in a few seconds.
Digital screens
Digital screens give brands more flexibility: creative can be updated during a campaign, dayparted to target specific commuter windows, or used to run multiple messages in rotation. They’re a strong choice for brands that want to test different creative or react to real-time events.
Cross track posters
Positioned on the opposite platform wall, cross track posters are viewed by waiting passengers for an extended period — often 60 seconds or more — making them well suited to messages with more copy or a clear call to action.
Tube car panels
Inside the train itself, car panels reach a captive audience for the length of the journey, which can be several minutes on longer lines. This is valuable dwell time that’s hard to replicate with out-of-home formats elsewhere.
Escalator panels
Positioned alongside the escalator, these formats benefit from a long, steady viewing angle as commuters travel between levels, making them effective for sequential, story-driven creative.
Matching format to objective
As a general rule: use posters and escalator panels for broad awareness, digital screens for flexibility and targeting, and cross track or car panels when you need longer dwell time to communicate more detail. Most successful campaigns combine two or three formats rather than relying on just one.
