Best Practices for Designing Adverts for the London Underground

August 24, 2026

Great Tube advertising creative works differently to a billboard or a social ad. Commuters are moving, often distracted, and typically only glance at a poster for a second or two. Here’s what tends to separate creative that lands from creative that gets ignored.

Lead with one idea

The most effective Underground adverts communicate a single, clear idea rather than trying to pack in every product benefit. If a commuter can’t grasp the message in the time it takes to walk past, the opportunity is lost.

Keep copy short

Aim for a short headline that can be read in a glance, with minimal supporting copy. Formats with longer dwell time — like cross track posters or car panels — can support a little more detail, but brevity is still king.

Design for the environment

Station lighting, platform width and viewing distance all affect legibility. High-contrast colour combinations and bold typography tend to perform far better underground than the subtle palettes that work well on screen.

Make the call to action obvious

Whether it’s a short URL, a QR code or a simple phone number, make sure the next step is unmistakable and easy to remember or act on quickly, since most commuters won’t stop to note down details.

Test before you commit

Where possible, view a mock-up of your creative at actual size, or ask your media partner for a station visualisation. What looks right on a laptop screen doesn’t always translate to a six-sheet poster on a busy platform.
